Top Ten Tips for Race Crew

February 16, 2009 – 7:53 am

As first mate preparing a crew for the upcoming Heineken Cup, I came up with my top ten list for race crew to be thinking about prior to our practice time on the water.

Here are my top ten tips for race crew in no particular order

Racing Top Ten

  • Key characteristics for crew – Concentration; quick reaction time; analytical skills; a desire to learn and improve; fun to sail with!
  • Communication – If something doesn’t look or feel right provide feedback to the team, pay particular attention to crossing boats and/or boats obstructed from view behind a sail.
  • Flat is fast – when heeling excessively (more than 15-20 degrees) the boat encounters negative forces, ie: decreasing center of effort and lateral resistance, which result in loss of boat speed and pointing (leeway). Be aware of balance on the boat and move weight to windward and amidships when appropriate – particularly in increasing wind conditions or upon a tack or gibe.
  • Wind Awareness – Be prepared to call puffs (gusts), shifts (lift vs header) which are seen as ripples, swells, chop, or dark spots on the water. Also note how the wind affects boats or landmarks in close proximity.
  • Speed and Pointing – Comparison of one’s boat speed and pointing to competitors in the same wind.
  • Boat handling -  An understanding of maneuvers as in smooth and properly timed tacks or gibes which minimize loss of boat speed. Take notes during practice sessions to memorize various crew position responsibilities for what to do and when
  • Teamwork – The key to performance sailing, and when practiced well it provides for a fun and rewarding experience for all.
  • Safety first -  Racing rule #1: Helping Those in Danger; A boat or competitor shall give all possible help to any person or vessel in danger.
  • Time on the water – Practice, practice, practice; Boat handling first and then strategy and tactics.
  • Sail fast – Everyone should be focused on and aware of the goal of sailing fast by providing input to the team.
